Night Maternity Nurse:
It can be helpful to manage the excitement of having a new baby with a balanced and practical approach to finding a good night-time routine, to ensure ‘sleeping through the night’ comes sooner rather than later!
A night maternity nurse is the best option for first time parents and parents who would prefer a more experienced maternity nurse with specialist knowledge. It is also the preferred choice when a baby is perhaps unwell or has a specific issue that needs detailed knowledge of the care required.
The duties for the maternity nurse are the same as for the night nanny, but will also include:
Advice on how to establish a sustainable sleep routine for the baby
Advice and support on breastfeeding and related issues
Advice on how to cope with postnatal depression
Advice on other related topics such as colic and reflux
Night Maternity Nanny:
Another option, for more confident parents, would be a night maternity nanny. They can take on the nappy changing, bottle feeding, settling duties at night and work between eight-12 hours. The night nanny will deal with all aspects of care for the baby and help adhere to any preferences the client has with regards to sleeping and feeding. Also included in their duties would be:
Changing nappies
Settling the baby
Night feeds
Preparing and sterilising bottles
Dressing and preparing the baby in the morning
A nanny share usually comprises two families, each with one child (sometimes more). If the nanny is required to work for more than two families, she would have to register as a childminder.
Typically a nanny who undertakes this type of work is employed on a ‘live-out’ or ‘daily’ basis and travels to one household to look after the children or alternates between the two homes. Occasionally a nanny will ‘live-in’ with one family and care for the other children in the house.
All our live-in nanny candidates hold a professional childcare qualification and bring years of experience in this sector. We take the utmost care in matching the right candidate to each family based on their individual requirements.
The live-in nannies we register are available to work in London, across the UK and worldwide on a permanent or temporary basis.
What to expect from your live-in nanny
Live-in nannies usually work between 10 and 12 hours per day, five days a week. Most families will also expect two nights babysitting to be included in the salary. A live-in nanny may work a 24-hour shift or five-six day shifts for a higher salary.
The requirement for babysitting Monday-Thursday should be agreed prior to commencement of the role. Any additional babysitting such as at the weekend must be paid extra. The babysitting rate for the weekends should be discussed and agreed before employment commences.
A live-in nanny is expected to undertake all nursery duties that relate to the children. They will provide care such as bathing, dressing and preparing nutritious meals. The live-in nanny will also wash, iron and organise the children’s clothes and belongings. She will ensure toys are clean and safe, and tidied away at the end of the day. The live-in nanny will also make sure that the children in their care are active and social, by organising playdates, attending baby classes, and taking children on outings.

The role and duties of a Governess/Governor
A governess/governor is employed to focus on the educational and emotional development of a child or children in a private household setting.
Most governesses/governors will come from a teaching background, sometimes supplemented by private childcare experience. In addition, they will usually be able to offer other specialist skills, for example they may be qualified to teach swimming, a language or a musical instrument.
A governess/governor will have full responsibility for overseeing both the formal and informal education of the children in her care (usually aged three to 16). As well as tutoring in all aspects of the curriculum, a governess will also help with the social and cultural development of the child, encourage self-awareness and creativity and promote good manners and etiquette.
Main duties of a governess/governor:
Following the child’s curriculum and tutoring in appropriate subjects such as English and maths.
Fostering the child’s educational, social, and creative development.
Organising outside activities such as educational outings; museums, art galleries, theatre visits and sporting activities.
Teaching specialist activities such as musical instruments, a language or sport.
Liaising with the parents, other tutors, and the nanny regarding objectives, progress and development.
Teaching manners and etiquette to help develop social skills. A governess/governor will be expected to work anything from five to ten hours per day, five or six days a week.
When parents start to look at childcare options, one of the first considerations may be to look at hiring a nanny. Responsible for all aspects of their life, a nanny is expected to bring up children, in a stimulating yet safe environment.
However as a child gets older, the idea of a governess becomes more appealing as a governess focuses more on home tutoring and education, as well as bringing up the child in the household.
Private nannies are often hired to look after very young children. This normally happens when the child is around four to six months old.
Governesses start to put a focus on educational care as well as household care of the children from 3 years old onwards.
This unique position combines the duties and skills of an experienced Nanny with those of a proficient and reliable administrator/household manager.
